If you plan to travel outside the UK with a trailer or caravan, new DVLA regulations require registration before departure.

The Government has released an updated notice on UK trailer registration for overseas travel, reminding motorists that any trailer weighing over 750kg must be registered before entering most European countries.

The revised guidance, published on 26 August 2025, makes clear that caravan owners must comply with the rules prior to travel, or face the risk of being refused entry at the border.

Who Needs to Register?

If you intend to tow a trailer or caravan over 750kg in weight aboard, then the unit will require registration with DVLA.

 
Required for travel to or through most European countries. Countries where registration is compulsory include France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Poland and Greece, alongside most other European nations.

Full list (as of August 2025): Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine.

Exceptions: Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, and Spain (unless transiting through other countries).

What You Need to Register?

Trailer manufacturer name
Trailer type (e.g., caravan, horsebox)
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or chassis number
Gross and unladen weight
Email address and payment method
Government Gateway user ID (can be created during registration)

How much does it cost to register a trailer in the UK?

£26 – First-time registration
£21 – New certificate for a new keeper
£10 – Replacement certificate

Do I need a separate number plate for my trailer?

Yes - Registered trailers must display a separate number plate. These are available from our accessories shop please note a registration plate can only be produced on production of a valid Trailer Certificate or the Trailer Number Plate Authorisation Certificate.

Carry the registration certificate when travelling.
Note: Abnormal load trailers also require a keeper’s certificate.
